INSTRUCTIONS FOR RESEARCH PARAGRAPH

1. Describe and summarize your website (for someone who has not read it).
2. Explain who wrote it, why it is trustworthy (authority), and evaluate its usefulness and helpfulness for your team project. (Remember, report all information objectively.)
3. Include a parenthetical citation for your website. You will need a citation for each separate page you describe. Put this at the end of your description and summary for that page and before your evaluation of authority and usefulness.
The parenthetical citation looks like this: (Author's Name). Use the title of the page if there is no author. The author can also be an institution who created the website.
4. Create a bibliography entry.
Example:
Davis, Susan Lucille. "7 Student-Tested Digital Storytelling Tools." Getting Smart. 11 April 2013.
30 April 2013.
http://gettingsmart.com/2013/04/7-student-tested-digital-storytelling-tools/ .

Reminder: All paragraphs should be written in 3rd person objective point of view. In other words, present your facts and observations, but don't make reference to yourself or your readers (don't use "I" or "you" or related pronouns).

HW: English Workshop, Chapter 20: Punctuation, "End Marks and Abbreviations" and "Commas in a Series" (pp. 241-244)

W (F) 5A: Review how to document sources -- both within your paragraph and in your Bibliography; apply what you have learned to your paragraph; 5B: Student Learning Teams
HW: English Workshop, Chapter 20: Punctuation, "Commas with Compound Sentences" and "Commas with Sentence Interrupters" (pp. 245-248)

Th (A) Do Step 6 of your R & D packet; complete and share your paragraph for your group's synthesis on Collaborize
Note: Since many students are still at the writing stage, they should spend what time they can on writing their paragraph description of their chosen resource. They should print out whatever they have been able to produce to work with in class on Friday. Everyone should come with something printed out and a USB copy in case we have access to computers to be able to edit and improve the paragraphs. If you feel confident that you are finished, you can also go ahead and add your paragraph to your team's "report" section on Collaborize.
HW: English Workshop, Chapter 20: Punctuation, "Commas in Conventional Situations" and "Review Exercise" (pp. 249-252)
F (B) Continue improving on your paragraph, upload to Collaborize when complete.
HW: On Monday: Turn in a copy of your research paragraph and bibliography, your R & D log and research packet. If not finished in class, post your completed paragraph to Collaborize before class on Monday.

Week 8 (May 6-10)

M (C) Before class, all research paragraphs and bibliographies must be posted on Collaborize; complete reflection (R and D packet, part 6.2); turn in R & D packet, Research Log, and printed copy of your completed paragraph/bibliography
HW: Do English Workshop, Chapter 20: Punctuation, "Semicolons," "Colons," and "Chapter Review" (pp. 253-258) Note: This was moved from Friday's homework.
T (D) Work in learning teams to organize and synthesize your group research document based on your work uploaded to Collaborize.
Prepare your "Research and Development" Document
1. Decide on an order for presenting your team's research. This will form the body of your team's document. Copy and paste each team member's research paragraph from Collaborize.
2. Write an introduction.
You introduction should connect all of your research to your team's project and provide a "road map" for your collective research document. Name each resource in order, but also make connections along the way.
3. Write a conclusion.
Step back and consider the impact of your research on your project.
4. Collect your resource information and produce a bibliography.
Remember, sources should be listed in alphabetical order.
5. Proofread and edit with your review of punctuation in mind!
Keep in mind that all of your work should be written objectively, that is, with no reference to “I,” “me,” “you,” etc. You can name the group or group members if needed, but should refer to them by name.
